Explanation of Dances
Slow Waltz — This dance is the grandmother of all dances and is still the most popular ballroom dance today. This romantic dance is a "must-know" dance for those interested in dancing a wide variety of ballroom dances.
Foxtrot — Fred & Ginger made this popular dance a standard in many of their movies. The popularity of the dance stems partially from the versatility of the different rhythms used in this fantastic dance.
Tango — This seductive dance is thrilling and expressive when danced properly. The chance for self-expression makes every dancer dream of dancing the tango.
Viennese Waltz — This fast waltz is very popular in Europe and is the waltz that is generally danced in movies. The swirling skirts of the dancers and the fast tempo makes this waltz very popular but is a more challenging waltz than the slow waltz.
East Coast Swing (Triple Time) — This is the most commonly danced swing dance that evolved from the jitterbug, which was the most popular dance of the 40's during the big band era. Today it is still the most commonly danced swing.
West Coast Swing — This swing dance is similar to East Coast Swing but to slower swing music which allows dancers to execute embellishments such as swivels, syncopation, and body rolls. This dance also works well to blues and slow country western music.
Hustle — This swing dance originated in New York during the 1970s. The Puerto Rican dancers orignated the dance, but Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta made it popular. We teach New York style, which is the style used in competition dancing.
8-count Swing — This easy-to-learn swing makes you an instant swing dancer. With one lesson you will be doing underarm turns and spins. Western dance fans dance this swing as well as anyone who needs to learn a dance in a short period of time.
Nightclub 2-step — A versatile dance that works great for most top-40 club music.
Rumba — This dance is slow, flirtatious, and very sexy, and a popular slow dance with ballroom and latin dance fans.
Cha Cha — This fast-paced dance is very popular with latin crowds and ballroom dancers alike. Venues where salsa music is played play this dances about ten percent of the time.
Salsa — This hot latin dance is the current rising fad. A full curriculum is available from Beginner to Advanced Salsa. Learn to dance authentic Salsa from Portland's own "Salsa King" Remos Reynosa and earn your graduation certificate once completing the entire course.
Merengue — This popular Latin American dance is danced by more people than any other dance in the world. It is played at Salsa venues about 30% of the time and is a must-know dance if you are planning a trip to South America.
Samba — A rhythmic, quick-paced dance originating in Brazil. We teach both traditional slow, sensuous ballroom Samba and Carnaval Samba, which is danced during Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.
Casino Rueda — Salsa danced in a circle.
This is a dance that originated in Cuba and has migrated around the world.
The dance is like Latin square dancing but much faster. Its popularity has exploded
in every major city in the world. Our studio is Oregon's home of Casino Rueda. Our
popular Friday night class and the dance party following has been featured in
Willamette Week's "Best of Portland' and the Portland Tribune, just to mention two.
